Exhibit Facilitator, Part-time Seasonal

JOB SUMMARY
Exhibit Facilitators monitor and interpret exhibits for guests, including opening and closing exhibits, periodic cleaning and resetting of components, and providing guests with educational interpretation of the exhibit content.  Facilitators create a welcoming and safe environment for all guests to enjoy.  Occasionally, Facilitators will lead basic science demonstrations during special events like Fernbank After Dark adult science nights, family Discover Days, and Museum Chills and Thrills evening events.

This job requires weekend and evening availability.  As a summer position, applicant must be regularly available the entirety of June and July.  There is a possibility of this role becoming regular part-time or on-call (events only) after the summer based on the needs of the museum and performance.

This job may also require some outdoor work on occasion.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

  • Monitor Fernbank’s indoor and sometimes outdoor exhibit spaces, assisting with opening, closing, and periodic component resets and cleaning
  • Create a welcoming environment by greeting guests, providing assistance as needed, and interpreting exhibit content for visitors
  • Assist with preparations for educational programs, including activity set-up and facilitation on family event days
  • Present science demonstrations during monthly evening events like Fernbank After Dark or Museum Chills and Thrills
  • Greet guests, orient groups, maintain safe and attractive environment, and assist guests with interactive components
  • Assist the Education Department with other tasks and duties as assigned 


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong customer service and public speaking skills
  • Experience working with and addressing diverse audiences
  • Basic knowledge of science
  • Previous experience working with young children a plus

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Must enjoy working with people, including children and families
  • Comfortable learning various science topics
  • Flexibility and a willingness to help wherever needed; energetic and creative
  • A self-starter able to work independently or as a team and see projects through to completion

Front Office Agent, Part-Time

Job Summary
The Front Office Agent will generally be the first Fernbank Museum of Natural History employee visitors encounter. It is therefore imperative that all employees in this department be polite, courteous and professional at all times. Front Office Agents must always display a genuine concern for the needs of all visitors and must be willing to exhaust all efforts to ensure that each visitor has the most enjoyable experience possible. Front Office Agents must also possess the ability to learn and maintain the museum’s cash-handling policies and procedures, as each agent is responsible for balancing sales revenue at the end of each day.

Functions

  • Selling museum, giant screen movie, annual memberships and any other special event/programs that the museum offers.
  • Providing accurate, professional and courteous service to each visitor.
  • Answering questions and directing visitors as required.
  • Maintaining knowledge of all museum programming.

Requirements

  • 1 year of face-to-face customer service skills
  • Flexibility in scheduling
  • Some evening, weekend and holiday season availability
  • 1 year of experience in cash handling and credit card processing

Skills

  • Basic computer and internet experience
  • Basic Outlook 365 skills

Guest Operations Associate

Position Summary:

The Guest Operations Associate is responsible for providing multi department support in all/ various guest facing functions including: scanning tickets, processing sales transactions, seating the Giant Screen Theater movies, greeting arriving guests, directing the flow of crowds, and leading guest birthday parties.   This position will focus on elevating the guest experience.

Major Functions:

  • Provide exceptional customer service and ensure excellent guest experiences
  • Scan tickets at the Ticketing counter and at Theater
  • Assist with seating guests in the Giant Screen Theater
  • Process sales transactions in the Café and Museum Store
  • On site coordination of birthday parties including greeting clients in the lobby, escorting them to the private party room, delivering food and re-setting room between parties
  • Provide general Museum support
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Museum’s current exhibits, movies and programming
  • Provide accurate, professional and courteous customer service
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work 15-20 hours per week
  • Able to work weekends, evenings and on or around holidays

Skills:

Interpretive Ranger, Full-Time

Job Summary
The Full-Time Interpretive Ranger will enhance visitor experiences in Fernbank Forest and WildWoods outdoor areas as a roving naturalist during public hours. In addition to monitoring conditions along the trails and outdoor exhibitions, the Ranger will provide interpretation of Fernbank's outdoor natural resources to the public. This job requires extensive time spent outdoors.  Current schedule is Tue-Sat, 9:15am-5:15pm, with occasional nights required (1-2 times/month).   

Major Functions

  • Evaluate and maintain trail conditions (i.e. mulching, sweeping, handling various tools and hand-pulling invasive plants).
  • Identify safety concerns and crowd capacity while circulating throughout Fernbank's outdoor areas
  • Respond to any potential emergency situations, stay in close communication with multiple departments
  • Perform opening and closing procedures and limited outdoor exhibition maintenance in conjunction with Exhibits and Facilities teams   
  • Monitor and mentor students, interns and volunteers working in outdoor areas of Fernbank's campus
  • Deliver outdoor interpretive programs for large and small groups and facilitate outdoor exhibitions
  • Assist Ecologist with forest research and data collection
  • Help with security and wayfinding to assist guests during occasional night events
  • Enhance visitor experience in outdoor areas by addressing guest questions and concerns 
  • Other projects and duties, as assigned, to support the Education Department and the Museum

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Work or volunteer experience in one or more of the following fields: biology, environmental science, conservation, ecology, education, interpretation, or related field. 
  • Some experience working or volunteering in informal science education is a plus
  • Experience working with and addressing diverse audiences
  • Strong customer service skills

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong communication and presentation skills coupled with enthusiasm for natural history
  • Ability to work outdoors, navigate challenging terrain, lift up to 50 pounds and walk 7-10 miles per day
  • Valid driver's license
  • Team player, but also able to work independently for extended periods of time
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changes in project needs and/or goals
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks through to completion
  • Willingness to support other Museum priorities as needed

Seasonal Museum Store Sales Associate

Job Summary:
Responsible for the timely processing of all sales in an efficient and friendly manner. Contributes to the efficiency of daily operations and the creation of the proper atmosphere for a successful and profitable store.
Major Functions:

  • Provide excellent customer service by demonstrating friendly and helpful service to all visitors and employees.
  • Work closely with all store staff and volunteers to ensure excellent visitor service standards by maintaining good communication skills.
  • Process all sales transactions quickly and accurately.
  • Resolve register related problems in a timely manner.
  • Be knowledgeable about all items sold in the Store(s) as well as general museum information.
  • Assists with receiving orders including counting, tagging and stocking merchandise on the Store(s) floor and helping to organize backstock in the Stock Rooms.
  • Open and close the Store(s), including making daily deposits and reports.

Other Functions:

  • Maintain proper merchandise display, store cleanliness, and adequate stock on hand
  • Aid in keeping store management informed as to merchandise and supply needs
  • Provide input regarding appropriate and timely solutions to conflicts and problems
  • Make appropriate decisions in the absence of Store management
  • Help with taking physical inventory
  • Perform all other store related functions as needed.

Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Some college preferred
  • Cash handling experience
  • Customer service experience

Skills and Attributes:
Able to maintain a positive and friendly attitude to provide excellent customer service. Know how to operate a cash register.

Special Event Staff, Part-Time

Position Summary
We have several openings on our special event team servicing our internal, public and private events. This position offers a flexible schedule in a unique work environment. A perfect job for college students or a great second job.

This is a part-time position, most shifts are nights and weekends; pay is hourly plus tips on cash bars.
