Café Attendant

Position Summary
As a part of the Fernbank Museum’s Café Team, this position is a key element in ensuring a quality guest experience. This position will alternate between front and back of house. Starting pay is $11.00 an hour plus tips.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Greeting Customer courteously while operating a cash register and taking and executing orders from Café guests
  • Counting cash drawer and assist with reports and deposits
  • Assisting with opening and closing duties including food prep, stocking, and cleaning
  • Maintaining dining area and kitchen work areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition including bussing tables, removing trash and rearranging furniture
  • Other duties as assigned

Cafe Supervisor

Job Summary
Supervise all aspects and duties related to the Café operations, including catering and special events.

Major Functions:

  • Supervise and assist with prep and execution of daily food sales
  • Supervise and assist with maintaining and organizing all kitchen areas

Director of Facilities

Job Summary:
Responsible for leading and directing the Facilities department. Recommends and implements long-range facility improvements and advancements to keep systems in line with industry standards. Sets all departmental policies and procedures for effective facility operations and maintenance. Creates the departmental budget and is responsible for expense management and adherence to established budget. Ensures that all building and grounds systems are properly monitored and maintained. Manages the department’s personnel resources to support Museum operations and maintenance. Maintains effective communications with all parties working with the facilities department.
Major Functions:

  • Track and implement emerging technologies as they relate to facility infrastructure, systems, safety, sustainability and security.
  • Maintain focus on strategic plan and business objectives when recommending or implementing facility improvements.
  • Schedule and carry out facility maintenance and upgrades with the least amount of impact on staff and facility operations.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date tracking of tasks, responsibilities, and projects on a weekly, monthly, annual, or other periodic basis.
  • Make recommendations to CTO concerning new technologies and direction.


  • Establish and manage the facilities budget with responsibility for the department’s financial resources.
  • Manage expense allocation to proper budget accounts.
  • Proactively monitor facility utilities with proper controls and take corrective action when usage is not in alignment with normal patterns.
  • Monitor all contracts and renew each in a timely manner to maintain continuous uninterrupted service.


  • Evaluate systems and maintenance issues as they arise and take appropriate corrective action for a prompt resolution, including communicating timely updates to all impacted Departments.
  • Obtain quotes when contractors or external work are determined to be necessary.
  • Proactively monitor contractors when working to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Establish and enforce clear deadlines for all projects.
  • Implement and maintain the computerized maintenance management system to effectively manage workorders and ensure accurate work history is maintained.
  • Implement and maintain preventative maintenance schedules on all systems.
  • Maintain adequate parts inventory and re-order stock as necessary.


  • Manage performance of facilities staff, custodial staff, contractors, and temporary workers.
  • Create and manage department work schedules ensuring adequate coverage for facility maintenance and operations.
  • Review hourly timesheets and time off requests to ensure timely submission for payroll processing.
  • Organize, prioritize, and assign work orders to maintenance technicians and custodial staff.
  • Monitor the status of Facilities projects in progress and at completion to ensure high quality end results; communicate status updates as appropriate.
  • Lead and direct facilities staff involvement with exhibit installations and de-installations.
  • Determine and enforce all facilities policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all safety and security regulations; determine and enforce training policies for all Facilities staff.


  • Communicate with all departments as needed when projects and maintenance work will affect them, and in response to all maintenance requests.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Finance department for all financial matters related to Facilities projects and responsibilities.

Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's, Associate’s or similar Technical degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Three or more years of related experience in facilities and staff management.

Education Facilitator

Education Facilitators monitor and interpret exhibits for guests, including opening and closing exhibits, periodic cleaning and resetting of components, and providing guests with educational interpretation of the exhibit content. Facilitators create a welcoming and safe environment for all guests to enjoy. Occasionally, Facilitators will lead basic science demonstrations during special events like Fernbank After Dark adult science nights, family Discover Days, and Museum Chills and Thrills evening events.

This job requires weekend and evening availability. As a summer position, applicant must be regularly available the entirety of June and July. There is a possibility of this role becoming regular part-time or on-call (events only) after the summer based on the needs of the museum and performance.

This job may also require some outdoor work on occasion.


  • Monitor Fernbank’s indoor and sometimes outdoor exhibit spaces, assisting with opening, closing, and periodic component resets and cleaning
  • Create a welcoming environment by greeting guests, providing assistance as needed, and interpreting exhibit content for visitors
  • Assist with preparations for educational programs, including activity set-up and facilitation on family event days
  • Present science demonstrations during monthly evening events like Fernbank After Dark or Museum Chills and Thrills

Event and Beverage Manager

Job Summary:
Coordinate all aspects and duties related to beverage services and on-site event management of Fernbank After Dark event and other internal events.

Major Functions:

  • Manage all aspects of special event beverage operations, including, but not limited to ordering, inventory, budgeting, and the reporting of beverage consumption and costs for each event.
  • Manage all part-time beverage staff, including, but not limited to hiring, orientation/training, scheduling, and overall performance of personnel.
  • Development of beverage menus for Fernbank After Dark and other events.

Security Officer, Part-Time

This position is under the direct supervision of the Security Chief, Assistant Manager of Security and when appropriate, the Security Shift Supervisor. As a member of the Security Department, this individual is responsible for the protection, safeguarding and security of all Fernbank Museum of Natural History guests, patrons, staff, volunteers, collections and assets. Both full-time and part-time positions are available.
Essential Functions

Special Event Staff, Part-Time

Position Summary
We have several openings on our special event team servicing our internal, public and private events. This position offers a flexible schedule in a unique work environment. A perfect job for college students and a great second job.
Schedule: P/T; most shifts are nights and weekends.
Pay: Hourly plus tips on cash bars.

Temporary Security Officer

Job Duties

  • Monitor Patron behavior to prevent touching of exhibit artifacts
  • Curb ‘running’ and playing by children to prevent accidents that could damage exhibit
  • Help direct patron traffic (if needed) through exhibit so that ‘crowding’ is minimized
  • Patrol the entire exhibit (occasionally) to determine that nothing untoward is taking place
