Created in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall, Roots & Shoots empowers youth to become changemakers by creating a better world for people, animals and the environment.  Roots & Shoots groups identify important challenges in their community and implement change through service projects.

Fernbank is proud to be the first museum in the world to initiate a Roots & Shoots project. Fernbank educators are leading a group of middle school students in planning and implementing projects around the Fernbank campus, including:

  •  Revitalizing Fernbank's Rain Garden. Volunteers removed debris, added new stones and planted native species in an effort to become changemakers and help create a better world.
  • Testing the quality of the waterways in Fernbank Forest and WildWoods . Volunteers tested chemical, physical, and biological features to make sure these spaces are clean and healthy for their natural inhabitants.
