Explore a Medieval Metropolis with Fernbank Museum’s New Film

“Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia” premieres Jan. 20, 2024.

ATLANTA, GA, Dec. 12, 2023 — Trek through the jungles of Southeast Asia via Fernbank Museum’s Giant Screen Theater and discover “Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia.” Starting Jan. 20, 2024, audiences can learn about the mysteries surrounding the rise and fall of this medieval megacity.

“Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia” tells a story about the largest and most advanced metropolis of the pre-industrial world. As the capital of the Khmer Empire, which lasted from the 9th to the 15th centuries, Angkor covered an area the size of New York City’s five boroughs. The city’s ruins were first discovered in 1860, and since this time, scientists have been working to provide answers to the puzzling questions, “How and why did Angkor fall?”

Through the immersive giant screen film format, guests will witness a visually stunning account of this once-impressive capital.  “Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia” reveals every side of Angkor’s storied life — from housing the largest religious monument in the world to building an engineering marvel never seen before, and from being the wealthiest trading center of its age to resisting invading armies.

Audiences will learn how scientists are reconstructing the past of this ancient city using techniques like archaeological excavations, carbon dating of cave features to illuminate how the climate has changed, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to produce scans of the buildings and features of this now-forested city. The mysterious disappearance of this forgotten empire will leave guests with a lasting impression of Angkor and, ultimately, the knowledge that our best hope for a better future relies on a better understanding of the past.

“Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia” is produced by Helio Projects Asia and Definition Films. It is presented and distributed by K2 Studios in Giant Screen/IMAX theaters at museums and science centers worldwide. The film is sponsored locally in part by the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation, Inc.
