Amazing Animals: Built to Survive

Have you ever wondered how some creatures can fly for miles without resting, sense prey hundreds of meters away, or crush over 8,000 pounds in one bite? From the inside out, every living thingincluding humans—is a machine built to survive, move, and discover. Try your hand at “flying,” feel how hard a giraffe’s heart works to pump blood, and investigate the other marvels of natural engineering.

This animated artistic series, narrated in 68 Mexican indigenous languages, highlights the cultural treasures and heritage behind the tales of an indigenous community rich in traditions that celebrate diversity. Moved by the loss of her Mayan grandfather, Gabriela Badillo created this project to keep the legacy of his language, stories, traditions and customs alive for future generations.

Enjoy trees and other displays decorated by local cultural partners that recognize celebrations including Christmas and Hanukkah, as well as traditions and practices like origami, indigenous art and national symbols. NEW in 2020: Outdoor experiences including giant snow globes and a sock skating rink.

Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed

On View February 13 – May 9, 2021

In this immersive, hands-on exhibition, find out what archaeologists have discovered about the ancient Maya civilization that flourished in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Visitors will learn about the lifeways of both Maya elite and working-class through authentic artifacts, architectural elements, reconstructions, and interactives.
