Adventures in Science

Join us as we investigate what it’s like to be a scientist! Engage with Fernbank educators and local Atlanta scientists as you enjoy fun experiences all around the museum.

Kennesaw State University Anthropology Club 

  • Explore ancient technology to learn how people of the past drilled holes in materials like shell and bone.    
  •  Explore the science of finger printing and its importance in police investigations. 
  • Try your hand at locating artifacts using metal detectors. (weather permitting)
  • Watch a flint knapping demonstration to learn how Native American peoples made stone tools. (weather permitting)

Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division 
Learn how science allows researchers to identify the age of deer.

Emory Herbarium 
Discover ethnobotany, the scientific study of relationships between plants and people through a variety of hands-on activities. 

Dr. Anthony (Tony) Martin, Emory University
Curious minds want to know—ask a paleontologist all of your dinosaur and other fossil questions.

 Nu Rho Psi at Georgia State University 
Explore a variety of brain-related activities, including a chance to see and touch a real brain. 

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Explore how circuits work and make your own robot circuit pin.

Fernbank Ranger Station 
11am to noon 
Join a Fernbank Ranger to explore the science of dendrochronology.  Learn how to age trees by counting the rings and test your skills with a diversity of tree samples.  

Science All Around the Museum 

  • Complete a science-themed word search. (Activity sheet in Great Hall) 
  • Explore combustion, aerodynamics, plate tectonics and more in the Fantastic Forces exhibit.  (Upper Level) 
  • Get hands-on in Fernbank’s new STEAM Lab (Upper Level, Naturalist Center)
