Innovative New App at Atlanta's Fernbank Museum Brings Science to Life by Connecting the Past and the Future with New Technology

First-of-its-kind mobile application combines new AT&T Wi-Fi solution and Cisco technology to redefine visitor experiences at the popular Atlanta museum

Atlanta, GA–Continuing its 20-year anniversary celebration, Fernbank Museum of Natural History is announcing a new mobile application that runs on an advanced network to deliver a unique and compelling experience to its visitors. The free app and free Wi-Fi will be available to visitors starting November 16.

Using innovative and highly accurate directional technology, the application and network are able to “pin point” a person’s location to deliver content and unique experiences while visitors tour the Museum.

The new Fernbank app uses the intelligence of the network to collect and deliver information to visitors and allows them to experience exhibitions in new ways. This includes the introduction of timely and relevant content (such as starting multimedia content on the device when a visitor walks into to a static exhibition), interaction with special “journals” that are customized and focused on scientific disciplines, and access to social media feeds to share their experiences.

The first journal available will guide visitors to explore the Museum as a paleontologist. The journal experience includes a combination of audio, video, touch-screen inter-actives, animation, sketchbook activities and question-and-answer challenges that are activated according to the visitor’s location within the Museum. As visitors complete the journal sequences, they gain access to enhanced content, added activities, hidden features, new challenges, rewards and more. This unique Fernbank experience is available via the Fernbank Meridian application, which is available in the iTunes store or by texting "FernbankApp" to 99000. The app will be available for Android users in the coming weeks.

What sets Fernbank’s application apart is its ability to draw visitors further into the exhibitions so they engage with the content and better remember the experience. The newly installed, free AT&T Wi-Fi network and mobile application was made possible by AT&T and Cisco in conjunction with Crawford Media Services and Meridian. This first-of-its-kind mobile app—launching November 16—will showcase the future of Museum engagement and redefine the visitor experience and serve as an example for other museums, schools and public services.

“As one of the first Museums to use context aware and location-specific apps, we see a great opportunity to inspire visitors with modern engagement,” said Jennifer Grant Warner, Fernbank’s Senior Vice President and Chief Programming Officer. “We are creating a more dynamic, engaging, educational and interactive museum by leveraging advanced technology for our visitors.”

Fernbank’s scientists and educators lead nearly 500 guided programs for students and visitors each year, expertly combining the unique insights of the instructors with the memorable events of exploring exhibits.  Fernbank Museum worked with Crawford Media Service to design the content of the museum application to expand the reach of its educators and further connect visitors to the Museum experience.
