Fernbank Forest is a 65-acre undisturbed, mature mixed hardwood forest located in Atlanta, which is part of Georgia's Piedmont region.

Although Fernbank Forest is the largest assemblage of such land in the United States, it is a small remnant of the type of forest vegetation that originally covered the Piedmont region. Since the 1860s, nearly all of Atlanta's original vegetation has been destroyed through farming and development.

Visitors to Fernbank Forest can see firsthand the primeval beauty of forestland as early explorers and southern Native Americans did hundreds of years ago. Trees, shrubs, wildflowers and ferns are labeled for visitors. Animals, such as squirrels, chipmunks, crows, woodpeckers, blue jays, box turtles and snakes, live undisturbed in their natural environment. Many species of protected migratory birds also thrive within Fernbank Forest.

The access path to Fernbank Forest is located at the Fernbank Science Center, 156 Heaton Park Drive, 678.874.7102.

Tour Fernbank Forest with Museum educators! Fernbank Forest Family Walks are offered throughout the year and focus on seasonal topics.
